A new bill signed into law will provide millions of children in CA with free books thanks to Dolly Parton. The bill, SB 1183, was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom and will provide funding for Parton’s “Imagination Library” program, providing free books to children from birth to 5 years old.
More than 2 million kids can now get books for free: With the signing of Senate Bill 1183 by Governor Gavin Newsom, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Program is now up and running in the state of California.
The money from a special fund will be used to “send age-appropriate books to each registered child in the programme once a month, at home, at no cost to their families, from the time they are born until their fifth birthday.” The programme, which started in 1995 and is active in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, and Ireland, is “dedicated to creating a love of reading and learning.” It started out as a campaign to give books to kids in East Tennessee, where Parton grew up. So far, over 190 million books have been given away.
The Imagination Library and California work together.
Since it started in 1995, the organisation has given more than 186 million dollars to children, most of whom come from low-income families. Because of this, kids can now make their own libraries. Parton and her foundation want to help children all over California. Sen. Shannon Grove, one of the bill’s co-authors, said, “Today is a big day. It’s the start of a big statewide project that will get books into the hands of California children at a young age. This will give them a lot of options for their future.”
Parton has been a supporter of children learning to read for a long time. In 1995, she started the Imagination Library. According to the website, Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland work together to support The Library. This programme gives free books to children from birth to age five to help them learn to love reading. The project started in Tennessee as a way to show respect for Dolly Parton’s roots. Since then, it has spread to 14 other states and five other countries. So far, about 186 million books have been given out through the programme. Patron said of the show, “I knew my dreams would come true when I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee.” I know that some of the kids in your neighbourhood want to do different things. They would like to be doctors, scientists, or pastors. Who knows, maybe a little kid wants to be a writer and a singer.
You can find the seeds of these dreams in books, and the seeds you plant locally can spread around the world. Children can sign up online HERE with the help of their parents or legal guardians. People who sign up will get a free book every month until they turn five. What did we do to deserve Dolly? The new law will be in effect in every county in California, which could help up to 2.4 million kids. Sen. Shannon Grove, who helped write the law, told KTLA, “Today is a historic day. It marks the beginning of a great statewide programme that will put books in the hands of California children at a young age, giving them access to a world of possibilities for their future.”
