Found a camera in my Air B&B. It was halfway behind the painting with only the lens peeking out. Discovered it because we heard it clicking after me and my girl got out of the shower.

We’ve put together some tips on how to find hidden cameras in your Airbnb after it was found that some Airbnb hosts were hiding cameras to record their guests. Airbnb hosts are supposed to let their guests know about any surveillance equipment on their property, but some have been caught not telling their guests about hidden cameras. In one case, a guest at an Airbnb room found a superhost’s hidden camera, and the host is now in jail.
Find hidden camera lens reflections with a flashlight.
The fastest and most common way to look for hidden cameras is to use a flashlight to look for reflections from camera lenses. It lets you quickly check a room for hidden cameras that aren’t well hidden. Close any blinds or other windows that let in natural light to cut down on glare and make it easier to see a lens reflection. Then, use a flashlight with a fairly focused light beam (you can also use the one on your phone, but it won’t be as good) to check any spots or surfaces where you think a hidden camera might be recording. As you move the light over the objects, look for strange light reflections that could be coming from a hidden camera lens.
Keep an eye out for things that are oddly shaped or placed.
Even though there are some very small cameras on the market today, most of them are powered by a memory card or another device that is usually bigger than the camera itself. Most of the time, these are hidden inside or behind other devices or things and are placed in a way that lets them see most of the room. Look in drawers, cabinets, and bookcases for strange wiring or equipment. Pay special attention to USB wall chargers or alarm clocks that look strange or big.
The best thing to do is to use RF detectors or apps that scan networks.
Andrew Barker found a hidden camera that was connected to the Airbnb host’s WiFi network. He was one of the first guests to find hidden cameras in an Airbnb. If you want to know how he did it, he wrote a blog post about how to find hidden cameras more easily. Using apps like Fing or iNet, which can show you what devices are connected to a wifi network, you can quickly see if there are any strange devices connected to your home’s wifi network. Even though nosy hosts can get around this by setting up a separate private wifi network for the hidden camera to connect to, it is a great way to quickly check your Airbnb for any unwanted equipment.
