Mod site deletes anti-Pride mod for Spider-Man, encourages angry users to delete their accounts
NexusMods and ModDB, two of the most popular sites for PC game mods, have taken down a project that took away the pride flags from the recently released PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. The mod was uploaded to NexusMods by a brand-new user account with no previous modding experience. Site administrators think this account is a “sock puppet” account used by one of the site’s users. In a blog post, NexusMods talked about this.
NexusMods says, “It’s clear that it was made on purpose to be a troll mod.” “The fact that the user had to make a sock puppet in the shape of a coward in order to post the mod showed that they wanted to troll and knew it was against the rules.” If they hadn’t been a coward and used their main account, we would have just taken down the mod and told them we didn’t want to host it. We would have banned them only if they uploaded it again after being warned. After the sock puppet was done, we didn’t have to question our choice.
NexusMods says it removed the mod and banned “the user’s main account and the sock puppet account.” The US flag, which shows up a lot in the original game, was added to the mod to replace the pride flags that were all over New York City. In a tweet, another well-known site for PC game mods, ModDB, said that the mod had been taken down. The tweet says that “ModDB is a place where everyone feels welcome” and that “we do not allow targeting marginalised groups.” Even though a lot of our content moderation is done automatically, we don’t let this kind of behaviour slide. The NexusMods article says, “Our policy is as follows: we want everyone to be welcome, and we want everyone to be different.” “We will take action against someone if we think they uploaded a mod to our site on purpose to hurt diversity and/or inclusion.” A NexusMods help page says that content may be moderated if it “may be widely seen as provocative, contentious, disagreeable, discriminatory, or abusive toward any real-world person or organisation.”
Please turn your account off. NexusMods writes, “If this policy offends you, if we’ve broken some moral code of business conduct that you can’t accept, then we’re sorry.” It’s a shame because the PC modding community has always made great mods for Insomniac’s Spider-Man game. These mods let players swing around the city as everyone from Spider-Man villain Kingpin to Black Cat, and there have been plenty of mods to change the look and colours of Spider-suit. Man’s The author of the offensive mod was immediately banned from Nexus Mods, and the offensive mod was taken down from the site. They said that the fact that the user had to make a cowardly-looking sock puppet in order to post the mod showed that they were trying to troll. “The sock puppet took away all doubt and made our decision easier to make.” Both of the user’s accounts have been banned. The main account and the sock puppet account.
