Starting in 2021, the Razzie Awards will continue their tradition of giving out awards for the worst movies the day before the Oscars. The 2022 Oscars will end awards season this weekend. Diana, a Netflix movie based on the Princess Diana Broadway musical, was nominated for the most Razzie Awards and won the most of them, five in total. The film won awards for worst picture, actress, supporting actress, director, and screenplay. Its run on stage ended on December 19.

The Warner Bros. Space Jam remake starred LeBron James, who was named the worst actor. This gave the movie the second-most Razzies, with three. Space Jam: A New Legacy also won the award for the worst pair of movies and the worst sequel or remake. In fact, it was nominated for four Razzie Awards, but the only one it didn’t win was for worst picture. Will Smith, who is in the running for an Oscar, won the Razzies’ redeemer award for his role in King Richard, even though he had already won four Razzies. In a video that was shown with the winners, the Razzies said that Jamie Dornan Belfast and Nicolas Cage could be up for the Redeemer Award. Eddie Murphy won the Redeemer Award in 2020, and Melissa McCarthy won it in 2019.

This year, Oscar winner Jared Leto got a Razzie Award for his work in House of Gucci, but Smith won’t know until Sunday if he has the terrible distinction of being the only person to have won both a Razzie and an Oscar. The Woman in the Window, from Netflix, and Karen, from Quiver Distribution, were both nominated five times for Razzies, but neither one of them won.

The nominees for the annual turkey shoot known as the Golden Raspberry Awards were announced or “leaked” over the weekend, in case you missed it or were too busy making “la la la” noises with your fingers in your ears. The list was copied and pasted correctly, but it didn’t fix mistakes like calling the star of “Tammy” “Melinda McCarthy” or saying that “Transformers: Age of Extinction” was pronounced “Trannies.” Not for nothing, but in July, I made a joke about the title that was funnier and less clever. Variety went above and beyond by coming up with its own creative way to misspell “McFarlene.” This shows how carefully the Razzie nominations are given.

In addition to media attention, one of the benefits is that movie stars pay attention to it: Sandra Bullock gave people DVDs of “All About Steve” before winning a Razzie the next year for “Catwoman.” Halle Berry brought her Oscar to the next year’s “Monster’s Ball” to pick up her Razzie. They want to be seen in the same way that people yell insults at comedians or yell “Whoo!” during a peaceful song. The Razzies don’t criticise low-budget independent films that no one has seen for having bad lighting or sound, which is the right thing to do. But it’s hard not to think that they’re doing this less out of principle and more because they don’t know Joe Swanberg from a hole in the wall.
