What does all conference mean in high school sports?
Learning through play is gaining prominence in diverse cultural and ideological contexts with very positive results several IB educators have revealed to IB World magazine. The game motivates children to experience learning through trial and error without fear of failure and without the pressure to meet the expectations imposed by adults. When integrated into the school context learning through play can provide children with an excellent opportunity to practice and master the skills they have been taught learn from each other and most importantly direct their own learning.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics the results have been incredibly positive: Play promotes physical and mental health. The game helps develop executive function. In Finland although children do not start school until the age of seven they are encouraged to learn through play from an early age. When they arrive at school they are immersed in an education with a great playful component that continues until high school. Learning through play is not an exclusive pedagogical doctrine of the Western world. China uses Anji Play an outdoor play experiment for preschoolers that is gaining traction across the country after a successful trial period. The Singapore Ministry of Education is attempting to change the paradigm of educational performance by adopting a new vision of exploration in childhood and of ‘purposeful play’. As far as the IB is concerned the enhanced version of the Primary Years Program (PYP) highlights the importance of play.
Teachers provide open engaging and engaging resources for students to use independently intervening only when necessary to raise questions and encourage play. However teaching through play is not without its difficulties according to educators. These are some of them: Provide adequate support to students when their ideas are very creative and it is difficult to respond to their needs. Set aside time to document learning through photos videos and anecdotal notes and turn this material into visible products. Ensure the entire team has a strong understanding of game-based learning a positive mindset and a willingness to change their practices. However these difficulties do not prevent IB educators from creating learning opportunities through play that are purposeful and highly successful as explained below. To help parents understand that learning can also take place outside of structured academic classes we invite you to engage with your child in the curriculum which is largely play and inquiry based. Thus parents also paint experiment with textures count and create patterns build games engage in pretend activities and write stories. The game gives children the opportunity to collaborate and develop social linguistic numerical problem-solving and critical thinking skills all of which are very valuable for life.
We work collaboratively with all parents and invite you to participate in our assemblies as listeners and speakers as well as to attend all of our informational events and meetings as well as parent-teacher and student-led conferences. Jennifer Hernández Stalder PYP teacher at A Taaleem School in Abu Dhabi UAE Our classrooms have different areas where children can express themselves and experience various forms of play: Art (painting and modeling with recycled material) The teachers they also observe and are aware of the children’s interests to promote learning. For example an interest in dinosaurs can provide a great opportunity to learn more about animals and to practice investigation and thinking skills or math concepts like size and numbers. All teachers participate in planning and discuss how outcomes skills and concepts can be taught through play and with a transdisciplinary approach. If for example we are inquiring about how weight is measured we make sure to place scales in different areas of the classroom such as the playdough craft area the sand and water container and the construction area. The teacher’s role is limited to introducing weight-related vocabulary and formulating questions that stimulate students’ work. Writing is another good example.
Our students do not have writing books. This activity is done at any time and always with a defined and relevant purpose: in the simulation activities area they write orders or menus and in the construction area they create labels and signs. Students come to the teacher when needed and the teacher helps them practice their writing and phonic expression skills. I am fascinated by the occurrences and ideas of my students. I help them learn when they need to and encourage them to communicate with each other use their thinking skills to solve problems as they arise and investigate any questions they have. During play sessions I take photos and make videos that I include in our digital portfolio to document learning. If I see an idea that reinforces our unit of inquiry an area of learning that needs attention or an attribute of the learner profile that is manifesting I can stop the class so that we can meet and discuss what I have observed. I always try to get students to focus on ideas that support lines of inquiry. This is where they encourage me to think of ways to provide the environment for them to develop their ideas: organize a field trip find a specialist to visit us or just see what I need to focus on next. The game allows students to participate in their learning and develop their independence and self-confidence.
Teaching through play is a continuous learning experience. The responses to the children’s academic progress have been incredibly positive. Levi Allison Music teacher at Chadwick International School Songdo (Korea) Students explore different musical elements with various instruments. I ask them questions to broaden their understanding or ask them the “why” or “how” of a decision to encourage them to come up with original ideas. I use different ATL skills to help them deepen that understanding. By giving them time and space to explore and play we have seen significant differences such as: Purposeful play is a very important element in helping students show their knowledge and interests. Catarina Peterson and Georgina Iraheta PYP teachers at Luanda International School (Angola) Earlier in the year a group of students expressed an interest in building marble tracks with large wooden blocks and other pieces. Over time other students joined them to create and perfect the tracks and to try different types of marbles. As they played they put into practice their mathematical knowledge of shape size weight and numbers as well as their social research and thinking skills. At the same time they explored the concepts of cause balance speed and structure. Three months later the interest in creating the marble courses has not waned. During the development of the unit of inquiry Who we are the area of simulation activities in the classroom became a space for exploration to respond to the growing interest of students in the human body.
There they explored adopted and assumed the roles of receptionists doctors and nurses and hypothesized about different situations that might require medical assistance. “Through simulation activities the students began to make connections to previous experiences and to use their imaginations to develop new theories that later helped them understand how the human body works and how it can ‘fix itself.’” We found that when leading the game children’s self-confidence helps them stay motivated and engaged. Also his ability to formulate questions question common points of view and express his new theories reveals his critical and creative thinking skills. Play provides students with authentic opportunities to practice their social skills. We have seen that they have improved their ability to cooperate share materials and make deals to get the game going.
They also show that they can be bold and open-minded when they choose to take on different roles allowing them to explore different perspectives. Sarah Neild-Le Conte Head of Primary New Cairo British International School Egypt The use of simulation activities in different contexts has improved students’ agency communication skills and language development and has enhanced other qualities such as imagination empathy understanding and critical thinking. Play-based learning encourages students to have their own ideas to follow their own lines of inquiry and to choose how and why they want to do certain things. In addition it has many therapeutic benefits. As students move through developmental milestones and circumstances throughout their lives play can help them deal with their feelings and experiences. We have seen the positive impact that learning through play has on our students’ ability to socialize and manage their emotions. In addition it favors the development of the ability to solve problems evaluate success and learn from mistakes by trying alternatives. Learn more about how IB teachers teach through play.
